Common House minutes: 2009-06-14
Minutes:
CH meeting 6/14/09Present: Katie, Emily, Bo, Becky, Mac, Linnea, Judith
Agenda
*Workshop wants to be subcommittee for CH
*Discuss budget
*concrete discussion continued
*what to do with the extra rack that used to be in the laundry
*update on wiki
*5 yr planning for CH
WIKI - Emily worked on the wiki, and it turns out to be very
complicated. We've changed jobs in committee, but the wiki has not
really been consistently updated. Apparently, the job names cannot be
changed, and is unclear whether or not we can delete old ones. Then
Emily got different answers when she talked to other people.
Confusion between us and work committee abounds! Emily will continue
creating descriptions and titles the way we want them to be.
Currently there are several room cleaner descriptions
*no exercise room cleaner
*guest/sitting/media combined
*game/media
*playroom is separate
so media room is on twice, and no exercise room.
Decision: we will officially change it so guest room, sitting room
and exercise together as 1 job, and game and media together as another.
Added to Laundry areas are supposed to run the "clean cycle" on the
washers.
We need to make sure that whatever we change, that the links to the
work survey - we are hearing different and conflicting things.
__
5 YEAR PLANNING - we were so impressed with how this worked for
Grounds, that we want to do it for the CH to help give us direction on
the following: energy efficiency, looks, changing around rooms, do we
still want 3 offices, concrete and possibly other things. We will
check in with process to see if there is money for this year left for
this. If not, we will try to do it ourselves over several community
meetings. The issue of the concrete entryway will likely come forward
sooner.
EXTRA RACK
We have an extra metal rack that no longer fits in laundry room. It
does NOT fit in the kitchen pantry the ways things are now.
Discussed, and decided to keep until we do a master planning session
with the community. Could store in west bathroom and use for storage,
or in the east bathroom furnace closet. Emily will make it happen for
the west bathroom. *post meeting note* it doesn't really fit in west
bathroom, will change out soon
BUDGET UPDATE:
*$817 in Fundraising account
*approx $500 left in operating for supplies - nothing left for
improvements.
Things we still want to do, but need help prioritizing will be new
locks vs new blinds vs concrete
CONCRETE
We've talked about this frequently in CH committee, but since I've
been lax about getting minutes out, here is a brief update of prior
discussions: We know the floor looks bad now. We hear that for some
people, this should be a high priority. From others we have heard
they would rather we spend the money on other things first. We have
had trouble getting people to come give quotes, some seem unsure of
how long it will last, some treatments require MONTHLY maintenance,
some yearly, all of which cost money. Our goals are to find some
solution that will look nice for a long time, not require too much
maintenance other than general moping. We've brainstormed everything
from leaving it like it is to tiles to marmoleum to something like the
floors at Whole Foods or Seva.
Katie will call on flooring companies to get options/estimates for
entryway. Since some of the prices we've received so far are around
$1000, and we do not have it in this year's CH budget, it is unlikely
to happen this year unless we do fundraising for it or use some
steering funds. How to pay for it will be one of the things we talk
about at the Community meeting.
WORKSHOP -
Workshop wants to be a subcommittee, not a standing one. They want to
be under CH. We had a long talk -we see all sides. Don't really want
it to be under CH because we don't want to run it or be responsible
for it if the sub committee ever stops working well. Are they going
to do their own budget? Are they going to have a convener? Why can't
they be their own committee? Are they big enough to be their own
committee? What exactly are we responsible for if they become a sub
- committee? Can we try it for 6 months?
Decision: Yes, we will try it for 6 months provided everyone
understands that CH committee will not be setting any policy for
them, they have to turn in their own budget, if we come to a point
where nobody is willing to head up the subcommittee, the workshop will
be closed until someone steps forward.
MISC
Katie will buy clock for sitting room
New CH schedule: 2nd and 4th sundays at 4pm
Note to all who use the laundry room - do to limited space, please
take your sweaters home to dry them. there are several very
