Common House minutes: 2013-08-24
Special Notes:
Child supervision policy; Mini-jobs; Office; Laundry posterMinutes:
Present: Sari, Paddy, Jim, HelenFeedback from the discussion on extending Child Supervision Policy (CSP) to
TS teens. See minutes from Monday's plenary.
The take home message from Monday,...™s community meeting
- Looks like the take-home was that we want more communication about
this from TS, and that we are willing to extend the teen policy to TS, but
are more hesitant about the tween policy (i.e. allowing them to gain the
privilege of being in the CH unsupervised).
- Samantha from TS might be doing her laundry (she is 13), please
encourage her to keep on doing so!
- We will continue this discussion once we have a TS representative
in the meeting.
Since Work skills have taken over most the CH cleaning jobs, so we need to
come up with other jobs for tweens who want to earn the privilege of being
in the CH without adult supervision. The list below includes suggestion
from the community meeting and from the ch committee:
Mini-job suggestions:
- Setting tables
- Folding napkins
- Bussing tables at the end
- Emptying recycling
- Going through lost and found and identifying items that belong to
the community kids (or themselves). They could deliver these items or put
them in cubbies.
- Weeding (e.g. on the play structure)
- Washing windows (not sure if 10-12 year-olds can take on this job
without substantial help from adults)
- Shoveling around GO
Monkey: Sari will send out a request for tween jobs and will bring the
summary to next meeting (email sent!)
Once we get all the jobs here we could print this out with additional
information (with names of the children who can participate, the fact that
parents should update the board, the 2 jobs per months requirement) and put
it next to the mini job board.
Painting costs (Sari)
This is the paint amount information from an email dating to 2004:
4 Gal., Hallways & Entryway, Liveable Green SW6176, Harmony Base, Eggshell
3 Gal., Dining Room, Clary Sage SW6178, Harmony Base, Eggshell
5 Gal.,Trim: Super Paint Interior Semi-Gloss Latex Extra White (Trim for
the entire CH)
I called Sherwin Williams, and they said the regular cost is 49$ per
gallon. They have a 30% off sale until Sept 2nd, and all the paint is 37$
per gallon (not sure we can decide the colors by then though!).
So, for the above-amount the paint would be 350$ (not including primer if
we need any, or any of the brushes, tape etc).
I just sent an email to Tribble (who did the exterior painting last summer)
to ask for a price quote for this job.
Plumbing - mixers. Did Sarah talk to Elph about getting a plumber? Any
progess?
Elph said he will look into this this weekend.
CH office - is meals interested in collaborating?
- Meals want space for equipment (not food). Food there would be out
of sight, out of mind. But we would remember to go there for equipment.
Meals envisions putting some shelving there for this.
- Gail also would like the archives there (in a locked file
cabinet). U of M property disposition usually has lots of these!
- So for now it looks like we will be using for the ch and not
renting it out. If in the future someone wants an office we can always turn
in back into that
- Also discussion about taking the door away to put the computer
there
Other:
- Sari will talk to Syndallas about laundry poster and try to
finalize and post it.
- 3 lights are out in the dining room. Maybe change these when the
ladders are in for the painting.
- Both of the lights outside the south-facing door (by the bell) are
out. Jim will take a look this afternoon (thanks Jim!), and if he has no
luck, he will come find Vincent/Sari to do the job.
- Concern about locking the Ch doors. Sari will send out and email
reminder to the community about both locking the doors and about closing
doors properly (Done!).
